Signed last month into law, the Serve America Act is a 5-year expansion of the domestic service program AmeriCorps. 10% of the new slots are for volunteers who are over the age of 55.
The Act also expands the Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion programs and authorizes scholarships for continuing education for those 55 and older. The awards are now also transferable to a child or grandchild.
Worth $11,000, Encore Fellowships will be awarded to up to 10 older volunteers per state to fund one-year positions in non-profits. What a wonderful way of sharing a lifetime of experience!
